Air Travel Between the USA and Europe Increasing Consistently
In the world of air travel, a noticeable shift is underway as average prices for flights between the United States and Europe continue to decrease. According to data analyst OAG, capacity from Europe to the U.S. has seen an increase since March 3, 2023. This trend is expected to become more apparent by late summer 2025, with the cheapest travel week identified as calendar week 35 starting August 25, 2025. One of the most significant changes has been observed on routes between Dallas and London, where American Airlines is the sole carrier following British Airways' withdrawal. Despite the reduced competition, average prices between these two cities have decreased by 10.1%. Similarly, prices on Chicago-London routes are around 5.1% lower than last summer, with a 12.8% capacity reduction. The robust connections between the United States and Europe remain strong, despite signs of a slowdown in the U.S. domestic market. Major network airlines have collectively boosted capacity on transatlantic routes this summer. Icelandic budget airline Play has increased its U.S. capacity by 19% in March, contributing to this trend. However, French airline La Compagnie has removed nearly a quarter of its planned capacity, a move that could potentially impact prices. Astrid Röben, a seasoned journalist with over 20 years of experience covering airlines, airports, and travel stories, advises customers to monitor flight prices due to largely unchanged capacity. Röben, author of several books including 'The Great Book of Airlines', 'The Joy of Flying', and 'Thai Airways: From Small Domestic Flight Service to Star Alliance Member', warns against sudden, knee-jerk reactions regarding widebody capacity, as these are rare in the summer season, as long-haul flights are sold well in advance. The trend towards more affordable flights across the Atlantic can be attributed to various factors, including increased competition, strategic capacity adjustments, and the easing of post-pandemic travel restrictions. However, tourist anxiety persists, with the lingering effects of the Trump era still impacting some routes. In summary, the summer of 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting time for travellers seeking affordable flights across the Atlantic. With average prices dropping on three-quarters of routes, including notable reductions on New York-Rome and Madrid-New York routes, it seems that the skies are becoming more accessible for travellers on a budget.
