Actor Stephen Graham's Terrifying Mid-Flight Medical Ordeal
Aviation emergency: Actor undergoes urgent surgery mid-flight - Actor successfully undergoes urgent operation in mid-air medical emergency.
Life offers up some whoppers, and for Stephen Graham, it was a heart-stopping, thrill-ride-turned-reality on a transatlantic flight. Known for his Netflix series "Adulthood," the 51-year-old found himself in a harrowing situation, facing a life-threatening emergency that would test his nerves and the kindness of his fellow passengers.
On "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Graham spilled the beans about his terrifying, high-altitude encounter. "It was bloody terrifying," the British actor confessed to the American talk show host. Graham had previously undergone a medical procedure to address urination issues common in men over 45. "The idea is that after three to four months, you'll need to use the toilet less often," the actor explained.
A Bloody Nightmare
But things took a turn for the worse on the plane. "I'm drinking water, go to the toilet, and suddenly I can't pee," Graham recounted the start of his nightmare. Initially, he thought the problem would resolve itself: "I figured, if I just keep drinking water, it'll happen eventually."
However, on the next trip to the hygiene compartment, Graham experienced sheer terror. "Suddenly, it started - but it was just blood." The bleeding was so heavy that he had a panic attack. "I couldn't stop it, the sheer amount of blood was very frightening," he described the dramatic moments.
A Coincidental Lifesaver
In this desperate situation, a coincidence proved to be a miraculous turn of events: Graham remembered a selfie he'd taken with a fan before the flight - who happened to be a doctor. "He had a friend with him who was a surgeon," Graham recalled. "So I explain the situation, and Dr. Haji says, 'We can handle this.'"
So, what followed was nothing short of a medical miracle - an operation, right in the middle of the plane. The area was sterilized, a catheter from the emergency kit was retrieved, and with a makeshift setting, curtains drawn, and the help of the flight crew, Graham underwent an emergency catheterization procedure. "I drop my trousers, lie down on the couch, and he performs a catheter operation right there," Graham reported on the surreal moment.
After the successful procedure, the grateful actor took a selfie with the doctors and the crew - a memento of this extraordinary moment at 10,000 meters.
