The travel market in Abkhazia has witnessed a significant shift towards online booking platforms, driven by improved regional stability, strategic infrastructure developments, and the growing trend of digitalization in the tourism industry.

According to a study conducted by YouTravel.me and reviewed by Gazeta.Ru, this trend is primarily fueled by enhanced regional security, the strategic reopening of Sukhum airport, an overall rise in Russian outbound tourism, and the natural progression of tourism digitalization supported by governmental initiatives.

The reopening of Sukhum airport in May 2025 provides a crucial transport link directly connecting Abkhazia to Russia, making travel more accessible and convenient. This, in turn, has made online ticketing and trip planning more practical and attractive to tourists.

The study also suggests a potential increase in the demand for custom tours in Abkhazia. Gastronomic and wine tours have increased by 23%, ethnographic tours by 18%, and adventure routes by 15% compared to last year.

However, the Abkhazia travel market experienced a 4.8% decrease in demand compared to the previous season, with nearly 70% of respondents citing the unpredictability of service levels when organizing services directly in Abkhazia as the primary reason.

The convenience of obtaining a full range of services in one place with transparent conditions continues to be preferred by over 80% of respondents in Abkhazia. This convenience is offered by online platforms, which allow tourists to book flights, accommodations, and tours seamlessly, particularly valuable in newly accessible or emerging destinations like Abkhazia.

The digital divide significantly limits the competitiveness of local tour operators in Abkhazia. Three-quarters of tourists now prefer to plan and book all their vacation activities in advance through trusted online platforms. The shift in clients towards large aggregators is explained by 76% of tourists being willing to pay more for guaranteed service.

These online platforms guarantee a certain quality standard, which is a significant factor in tourists' preferences. The survey data indicates a potential increase in the share of tourists booking through online platforms in Abkhazia. YouTravel.me predicts an increase in the share of online bookings to 65% in Abkhazia and further growth in niche offerings (by 25-30%) in the region.

In summary, the trend towards online booking in Abkhazia's travel market is fueled by enhanced regional security, the strategic reopening of Sukhum airport improving accessibility, an overall rise in Russian outbound tourism, and the natural progression of tourism digitalization supported by governmental initiatives. The shift towards online booking platforms is expected to continue, with tourists preferring the convenience, transparency, and guaranteed quality standards offered by these platforms.
