A man originating from Britain has been consistently visiting the town of Gaggenau for three and a half decades.
In the picturesque town of Ottenau, Germany, a unique friendship has spanned over three decades. The friendship between Ian Wedgebrow, an Englishman from Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, and Volker Schwebke began in the 1980s, rooted in their shared connections with local companies Mayflower Vehicle Systems GmbH and KWH Automotive GmbH.
Ian's six-week assembly stay at Mayflower in Ottenau marked the beginning of this long-lasting bond. After the company was sold to KWH Automotive GmbH in 2004, Ian continued to visit his friends in Germany, making annual trips to the charming village of Gaggenau.
The friendship has been a source of joy and cherished memories, leading to numerous joint vacations over the years. Volker's interest in England and the English language stemmed from his late brother Wilfried, who had an English godfather. This shared affinity for England has only strengthened their bond.
One of the highlights of their trips has been their excursions in the Black Forest. The Waldseebad, the Barefoot Park in Hallwangen, the Baumwipfelpfad in Bad Wildbad, the Mehliskopf bobsled run, and the swimming pool in Schöllbronn have all become favourite destinations for the group. The group's latest adventure was a week-long vacation in Gaggenau, which was as special as ever, with Ian's daughter Haley, grandchildren Luna Ray, and Evelyn Rose joining in the fun.
The group keeps in touch via WhatsApp, maintaining their connection despite geographical distances. Sonja and Reiner Margulies, who joined the group 25 years ago, have also become an integral part of this friendship. The English family stays with the Margulies family during their Gaggenau vacations, further cementing their bond.
Sadly, the pub in Gaggenau's main street, a location of their meetings, closed at the end of July 2022. However, this setback has not dampened their spirits. Ian's latest email promises a return to Gaggenau, indicating that their friendship continues to thrive.
Ian's mask from the Ottenau Fasent parade now hangs in his closet at home in Bromsgrove, a tangible reminder of their shared experiences. The friendship between Ian and Volker, which has endured through several significant changes, remains a testament to the power of friendships that transcend borders.
